Aug. 4

History Conversation

  • Peter Coe Verbica, author of “Hard-Won Cowboy Wisdom (Not Necessarily in Order of Importance),” will discuss the Coe family’s contributions to the state, including the landmark gift by Sada Coe Robinson which put Henry W. Coe Park on the map from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hiram Morgan Hill House at Villa Mira Monte. Peter will also share anecdotes about the family, including his mother’s attempt at roping a mountain lion while horseback on Pine Ridge. Peter is a senior financial advisor and has served as trustee and officer of various nonprofit boards. In his spare time, he teaches “Principles of Investments” at SJSU in the Economics Department. He is married to Tiffany and has four daughters.

Wine Tasting at Villa Mira Monte

  • Taste wine from Mann Cellars & Paradise Valley Vineyards from noon to 5 p.m. at the Hiram Morgan Hill House at Villa Miran Monte. Bring a picnic snack and buy a bottle and enjoy the ambiance. This is a great starting point for exploring history, regional wineries as well as shopping and dining in downtown. There is a $5 tasting fee at each winery, applies to bottle purchase.

 

Aug. 9

Visit the Human Library

  • The Morgan Hill Library will host a chance for residents to “Check out” a real person, rather than a book, and learn more about the person’s story and life experiences. The aim of the Human Library is to explore and move beyond stereotypes, and learn more about each other through stories. During the event, patrons will have the opportunity to check out human “books” to read through one-on-one, 20-minute conversations. The library is located at 660 W. Book Launch, Meet the Author

  • Meet author Matt Brandt as he launches hos new book, “The Boy from the Forge,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at BookSmart, 1295 E. Dunne Ave. This is a coming-of-age story that skillfully combines nostalgia for friendship, first loves, and choosing one’s path into adulthood … Max’s moments of internal dialogue about how to move forward in life are true to the difficult choices teenagers today face. Aug. 11

Book Launch, Meet the Author

  • Meet and speak with Morgan Hill resident Charles Liegl as he launches his book “Search for the Shooting Star,” at 11 a.m., at BookSmart, 1295 E. Dunne Ave. Protagonist James Breck, a World War One veteran, is the station manager of an entertainment radio station in San Jose, in December 1941. His involvement as a material witness of an accident throws him into a case that involves an international spy ring. A Pilot since 1982, Liegl is a flight enthusiast.  At 16 he got the “flying bug” and in 1982 he was certified as a pilot. Planting California Natives

  • Learn how, when and where to start or expand your landscape with beautiful California native plants from 9 to 11 a.m. at the St. Louise Hospital Teaching and Demonstration Garden, 9400 No Name Uno. They use limited, are easy to maintain and some are even edible. A list of plants native to this area will be provided at the talk, presented by UCCE Master Gardener Carol Peck.

 

Downtown Historic Walking Tour

  • Experience the rich history of the buildings in downtown Morgan Hill from 10 a.m. to noon. Take a walk into the past and learn about the buildings and the characters that built, owned and operated them throughout the years. The docent led tours are free, and donations are graciously accepted. Meet at the Third Street Plaza in front of Coffee Guys.

 

Aug. 12

Community Picnic at Villa Mira Monte

  • Come for a free day of relaxing fun and an old-fashioned picnic — tables and chairs provided from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Villa Mira Monte History Park, 17860 Monterey Road. Pack a picnic or purchase a lunch on site — hot dogs, burgers, sides and beverages will be provided by Grinds, Vines and Automobilia Café. Wine and beer will be available at a cost. The local band “Midnight Sun” will perform a little bit of country and a little bit of rock ’n roll, with a twist. Mavis McGaugh will call square dances and there will be ponies and a petting zoo for the children along with vintage crafts and games. The antique Morgan Hill police car will be on hand for photo ops.

Boost Math Skills

  • The Morgan Hill Community Adult School is offering free math enrichment classes in August. The Aug. 13 to 16 pre-algebra to beginning algebra classes take place from 5 to 8:45 p.m., at the Adult School, 17960 Monterey Road.
