Taiko drummers perform during the 2014 Haru Matsuri Spring Festival.

The Buddhist Community Center will host the 57th Annual Haru Matsuri Spring Festival along with the 21st Northern California Taiko Expo.

The Haru Matsuri is south Santa Clara County’s oldest, continuing cultural event. This year’s festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 30 and will include cultural and historical displays, martial arts demonstrations, and Asian cuisine.

The goal of this event is to provide cultural awareness, insight into the heritage of Japanese Americans, their contributions and historical significance within the local community and at large.

The Nisei Veterans’ display and the local Japanese community historical displays provide a glimpse of the Japanese American experience in Santa Clara’s South County. The Taiko Expo will feature several drum groups. San Jose Taiko, Morgan Hill’s own Sandoshin and Niseishin Daiko, and Watsonville are all scheduled to perform, with more groups to be announced.

There is no charge for admission or parking, outside food and beverages are not allowed, and please leave pets at home.

The event is located at the Morgan Hill Buddhist Community Center, 16450 Murphy Ave., across from the Outdoor Sports Center. The main entrance access is from Barrett Avenue where parking guides will direct traffic to the free parking lot.
