Now that the summer recreation season has come to a close, it’s time for man’s best friend to take a dip at the inaugural Doggie Dip Day at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center Oct. 19. The cost is $5 per dog and includes one handler. Additional handlers, who must be at least 16, cost $2. Small dogs (less than 50 pounds) are allowed to swim from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Larger dogs, weighing more than 50 pounds, can swim from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The Community Services Department said the dogs will not be in any pool that is currently used for swimming. The event will take place in the recreation pool, which is currently closed and will not reopen until the 2014 summer season. Following the event, the pool will be drained and cleaned for future use. The event was intentionally scheduled prior to this annual cleaning. Now that’s putting a community asset to good use. Oakwood School 1st graders celebrate the school’s 15th birthday earlier this month.

Congratulations to Oakwood School, which celebrated 15 years of educating pre-school through high school students Sept. 16 by singing “Happy Birthday” and enjoying cupcakes and ice cream. Fifteen years ago the school opened in portable buildings on John Wilson Way in south Morgan Hill while permanent buildings were under construction. The school educates about 425 students at its college-preparatory campus. For more information about the school, call (408) 782-7177 or visit www.pictureoakwood.com.

Mark Fenichel

Mark Fenichel

Finally, Publisher Marty Cheek and I are proud to bring the experience of Mark Fenichel, our new advertising manager, to Morgan Hill Life. Mark comes to us from Metro where he worked for almost two years. His career in advertising began in 1976 at KCSC Radio at Chico State. In 1979 he began working for KOME in San Jose, and since then has made his mark – pun intended – at radio stations in the South Bay and an 11-year period when he worked at KNTV 11 and cable TV. Widely known for the creativity and care he brings to his clients, he is also talented as a top-notch harmonica player who has shared the stage with Eddie Money, Greg Kihn, Johnny Winter, John Mayall, Pat Travers, Jesse Colin Young, Joe Satriani, Ronni Montrose, Jefferson Airplane, Etta James and hundreds of local musicians and bands. Mark looks forward to writing a column about the local music scene. Welcome Mark!
