Congratulations to players on The Spirit of Morgan Hill, 16 & Under Fast Pitch Softball Team who claimed their first championship with a hard-fought come-from-behind win over the Placerville Rush. Down 5-2 in the fifth inning, the Spirit girls scored four runs to win 6-5. With one out and a Spirit runner on first, Deanna Mendes came to bat and ripped a single that moved Mariah Baumgardner to scoring position. Taylor Austin then ripped a single then Mikhaele Sakamoto drove a ball to deep left center. The Spirit now trailed by just one run. Finally, Kendall McGowan drove a long ball to the outfield for a game winning double. Great job, girls!

Lorna Saiki, president of Valle del Sur Art Guild, asked us to let our readers know there will be a memorial get-together honoring founding member and talented South Valley artist Cheryl “C.J.” Myers who died Aug. 9 at the age of 70. The event celebrating her life will be held at Betto’s Bistro in downtown Morgan Hill starting 6:30 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 20.
Besides helping to start the art guild more than 20 years ago, Myers played a role in creating the Gallery Morgan Hill where local artists display their paintings and other artistic creations.
“She battled cancer and a whole host of other illnesses in the span of six months with acceptance, dignity and a sense of humor,” Saiki told us. “C.J. accomplished much in her short life as a mother, professional artist and was at the top of her art when she passed.”

Two years into his retirement, Ed Tewes, former Morgan Hill city manager, was recently selected to fill in as Gilroy’s interim city administrator. Tewes led the city of Morgan Hill for 13 years and will manage Gilroy while a recruiting firm conducts a national search for someone to fill the position on a permanent basis. Congrats Ed! Glad to see you’re still in the game.

Local educators got a give-away last month when Morgan Hill’s Teachers Aid Coalition handed out much needed supplies for the classroom. TAC made its funds to pay for the supplies at the popular Chocolate & Wine for Valentine event last February, put on by dentists Jon Hatakeyama and Don Nguyen. Many Morgan Hill Unified School District teachers came to the multi-purpose room at P.A. Walsh STEAM Academy and sorted through boxes of paper, pencils, pens, erasers other essentials for helping young minds learn effectively.

For all you Silicon Valley commuters out there, get ready for some changes. Metering lights from Highway 85 to the Monterey Road exit in Gilroy will be turned on some time this month, according to our favorite Mercury News columnist “Mr. Roadshow.”
The meters on all southbound 101 ramps will be active from 3 to 7 p.m. except Fridays when they will be turned on 30 minutes earlier. The northbound meters in the same area will be turned on from 5 to 9 a.m. As someone who no longer commutes, I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not.

The ghouls and goblins are coming to downtown Morgan Hill as the 2015 Safe Trick or Treat will be held from 5 to 7 p,.m. Saturday Oct. 31. Every year, the city of Morgan Hill and the Morgan Hill Downtown Association team up to bring a fun and safe tradition for families to trick or treat downtown. Our local businesses join together to bring a family-friendly event that provides a safe environment with candy, face painting, mini baseball, photo opportunities and more. This is free for the public and is geared toward children 12 and younger.
This year, there will be a phantom judge from Morgan Hill Life who will wander the streets looking for the best homemade costume. The winning ghoul will receive a gift certificate to a downtown merchant and his or her photo in an upcoming issue of Morgan Hill Life. See you downtown!
