The big man in the White House and other VIPs got a taste of a local wine recently, after Gene Guglielmo got a call from George Patton, the food and beverage manager at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose.

According to Gene Guglielmo, director of sales and co-owner of Guglielmo Winery in Morgan Hill, Patton contacted him about serving Guglielmo wines exclusively at the May 8 Democratic National Committee fundraiser. “Patton told me he needed some special wines for an exclusive dinner with a group of VIPs. Oh, and one of them is the President of the United States!” Gene exclaimed. “That was a great phone call to receive. We have a very successful long-term relationship with the Fairmont, and this is certainly recognition of the quality of our locally grown and produced wines. We are very honored by the request.”

The Fairmont served President Barak Obama and his honored guests the Guglielmo 2012 Private Reserve Pinot Grigio and the 2010 Private Reserve Pinot Noir. Several of the winery’s TRE label wines were offered as well. By the way, since the event, the wines have sold briskly, and there’s very little left of the Pinot Noir, so get to Guglielmo’s and pick up a bottle.

Gene was invited to the dinner, but at $32,400 a plate, politely declined. Good thinking, Gene, and congratulations. Another feather in Morgan Hill’s cap.

For you fans of ultimate frisbee games, open enrollment for the next season of the South Bay Ultimate Disc Society begins May 28. The games are a place to meet a great group of people, get in some good exercise, and have fun. Each eight-week season is played under lights on the beautiful turf field at the Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays. All ages and experience levels are welcome. A $45 fee includes field time, lights, and insurance. The only equipment required is you (although plastic cleats come in handy). For registration and more information, please contact Eric Upchurch at (805) 455-2136 or e-mail him at [email protected].

Congratulations to the organizers of Sowing Seeds, Nurturing Dreams who made last month’s Gavilan College Fundraiser a wonderful success. About 200 people gathered in the transformed Gavilan College Student Center to sample gourmet food and fine wines, bid on auction items and socialize. The event raised more than $15,000 for student scholarships and emergency needs and 11 $500 scholarships were presented at a scholarship ceremony on May 9.

Council member Marilyn Librers will head to China for two weeks in June to represent Morgan Hill in an economic development trip for Silicon Valley mayors and vice mayors. The trip will cost city taxpayers nothing because it is sponsored by China Silicon Valley Foundation and The Chinese People’s Association for Friendship With Foreign Countries (CPAFFC). Librers will visit Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Shenzhen which are all industrial cities. She plans to visit the China facility of Specialized Bicycles, one of Morgan Hill’s largest employers. Enjoy the trip, Marilyn!

Gilroy Coldwell Banker recently hosted its 9th annual Habitat for Humanity Fundraise, Party in the Vineyard, raising $11,500. All proceeds from this event go directly to the charity because we are able to get everything donated- include the food from The Westside Grill and the venue at Fortino Winery. We are a small but mighty office and everyone works together as a team. We want to thank the entire community who supported this event!
