It isn’t breaking news to anyone that we live in hyper-competitive times.”Good enough” doesn’t cut it anymore. This is as true for the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce as it is for any other company, organization or individual. Looking back over the first 11 months of 2013, we have some successes to be thankful for.

For example, our second “Rock the Mock” high school student intensive coaching program was a huge success and earned “wows” from the students and volunteers alike.

The Friday Night Music Series had by far the best (and most consistent) turnout in its long history, drove a lot of business to downtown establishments, and was financially successful in its own right.

The Taste of Morgan Hill likewise kicked it up several notches with a new Saturday night concert and street dance downtown, which was an unequivocal success.

In the programs arena, our recent special seminars for nonprofit board members and businesses seeking profitable growth through social media were both highly useful and impactful for the participants.

Speaking personally, there are things I see differently and do differently thanks to insights gained at those seminars. Look for more community engagement and effective action from the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce in the days, months and years ahead. The 2014 Celebrate Morgan Hill dinner honoring our Man, Woman, Volunteer, Educator, Student and Business of the Year Jan. 25 is something you’re not going to want to miss.

Leading us through the many changes and improvements we have in mind is an amazing board of directors composed of people throughout the regional business and nonprofit communities, all of whom are committed to making a positive difference.

Our newest board members are Sam Kabert from Value Business Products, Dusty Perryman of Digital View, and John Telfer with South County Realty. Finally, a word of thanks to Lorraine Welk for her six years of extraordinary board service.

We look forward to her continued engagement with the chamber, even as she takes on the challenge of chairing Leadership Morgan Hill in the year ahead. To Lorraine and all the other amazing people who move our community forward, thank you.

John Horner is the CEO/President of the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce.
