Candy with a kid’s haircut? It’s not exactly what you’d expect from a downtown Morgan Hill business. But it’s a brilliant idea and you can experience the unique twosome at The Candy Parlour thanks to owners Nancy and Chris Reynolds.

My first visit since the store’s move across the street to the south side of Monterey Road next to Just Breakfast was also the first non-family member haircut for my son. We walked into the bright and welcoming store, and a few minutes later I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me as I witnessed my preschooler sitting still for his entire haircut.

Perhaps the hi-def movie playing at the perfect angle slightly influenced the situation, but I’ll take it. I seized the opportunity to browse the store’s massive candy selection, and locked eyes on my all-time favorite: Chic-o-stick. And of course, who can resist the Big Hunk? I was set for the weekend and still got to peek in on the finishing touches of my son’s haircut.

If you’re saving your candy craving for Halloween, but are still in the mood for an afternoon downtown with the family, stop by BookSmart for a little reading time and ice cream. Or visit The Music Tree to find your inner-musician. BookSmart and The Music Tree are staples of downtown that provide value to our youth and are owned by people who truly care about the integrity of Morgan Hill.

BookSmart is the passion of husband and wife team Brad Jones and Cinda Meister. The couple opened BookSmart in 1995, which started as a small general bookstore and has since grown to a 7,500-square-foot store filled with books and educational toys, greeting cards, magazines and café food items.

Darin Dixon bought the legendary Music Tree in 2005, but has remained true to its roots that date back to 1974. Darin has a deep appreciation for the art of music, but it’s his genuine passion for providing youth and young adults with the opportunity to learn how to play a variety of instruments, in a safe and fun environment that sets him and The Music Tree apart.

Speaking of fun and safe, Halloween is one of the top three holidays of the year for kids who live in and around Morgan Hill. If you have kids 12 or younger, there’s no better place to be Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. than downtown Morgan Hill at the Safe Trick or Treat event presented by the Morgan Hill Downtown Association. Enjoy the end of our Indian summer with a stroll down Monterey Road as your mini Iron Man and his first-grade pack of Avengers load up on candy and goodies passed out by local businesses. Then make your way down to Third Street to explore the Kiwanis Haunted Pirates Cove, or play a little mini baseball and don’t forget to get your face painted.

Happy Halloween!
