The Western Stage presents a new adaptation of Sinclair Lewis’ chilling novel, “It Can’t Happen Here,” a cautionary tale of the fragility of democracy. When a demagogue becomes President of the United States, promising to return the country to greatness, we witness the rise of tyranny as the new President imposes a totalitarian rule with the help of a paramilitary force. Watching from the sidelines is journalist Doremus Jessup, who trusts the system will fix itself – until he ends up in prison camp. Doremus and a courageous few struggle to fight the new regime as part of a liberal rebellion.
