As a retired small business owner, I understand how to balance a budget, plan for future expenses, hire the right people and sometimes terminate those who don’t meet acceptable standards. I bring those skills to this position.

The drought is still a top priority and sound experience is needed to continue to employ smart conservation to protect our supply of safe, clean water.

We must continue to protect the South County water rates from rising by protecting the open space credit, and I commit to continuing to fight for the credit.

I have been a strong voice for stimulating the local economy by building environmentally responsible flood protection projects, like the Llagas Creek Flood Protection Project, which have created numerous jobs and employed many local residents. I am proud to have received endorsements from the South Bay Labor Council and Local 21 AFL-CIO.

Among numerous endorsements received are former (Gilroy) mayor and Santa Clara County Supervisor Don Gage, “John is the right person representing south county,” current Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, “I’m proud to endorse John Varela for election to the water district. He brings experience and common-sense ideas to the complex issues facing the water district,” Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate, “John has done a remarkable job in his first half-year as a SCVWD director. He’s absorbed a wealth of water knowledge while broadening his connections and relationships. We need to keep him on the board, strongly representing South County.” Gilroy Mayor Perry Woodward said, “I support John Varela for election to the water district board. He knows our communities and is a dedicated public servant.”

My priorities are to provide safe, clean water, assist our local agricultural community with water delivery, keep Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy water rates low by protecting “open space credit,” complete the Llagas Creek Flood Protection Project, increase the delivery of advanced purified water, and protect our watersheds and environment from pollution.

I ask for your vote to continue as an experienced director who knows how to safeguard our water supply and environment and to complete the legacy began by my friend and colleague, Director/Mayor Dennis Kennedy!

John Varela was appointed in December to replace Santa Clara Valley Water District Board Director Dennis Kennedy. He is a former mayor and councilmember of Morgan Hill, a member of the board of directors of the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, and a 30-plus year member of the Morgan Hill Kiwanis.
