Following a major disaster, fire, law enforcement and emergency medical services will likely not be able to meet the demand for services. Individuals and families will need to be self sufficient for at least three days. Joining the Community Emergency Response Team can help you better understand how to be prepared and respond to a major disaster.

The CERT curriculum trains students in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and medical operations. The class begins Sept. 10 and concludes Oct. 26 with a disaster simulation.

The training is free to South Santa Clara County residents. High school students are welcome and will receive community service hours for their participation. Classes meet from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Morgan Hill Police Department.
