David Thomas

'Keeper'-book-cover-1-webAt age 62, the best things in Morgan Hill resident David Thomas’s life are his three granddaughters and two grandsons. But when he’s not spoiling them with tennis games, fishing trips and ice cream, he has been spending his time writing an action-thriller novel titled “Keepers.”

Influenced by authors James Patterson, Clive Cussler, Bernard Cornwell, Vince Flynn, and Michael Crichton, Thomas’s newly-released novel is timely in terms of the current fear of domestic terrorism. He will be doing an author talk at BookSmart bookstore 1 p.m. Saturday Nov. 7.

Morgan Hill Life asked Thomas about his book and what inspired it.

Please describe for readers the story-line of “Keepers.”

The hero Sean Malone and his best friend Jake Collins, who is also his co-worker at Homeland Security, are teamed up with Angelina Cartier.

This beautiful FBI agent has been assigned to travel to the Pacific Northwest to try and stop an act of domestic terrorism. One of the problems she faces is that she has very little field experience. However, she has a secret weapon. Sean and Jake have more experience than she could possibly fathom. This and the fact that Sean Malone has a gift, much like a sixth sense. Together they must use all of their resources to try and stop a sinister plot against the government.

Why do you believe readers might enjoy reading your novel?

I think that between the story line and the fact that I tried to make sure that there is plenty of action and some humor in the way I presented the characters and the storyline, I was able to deliver a tale that grips the reader.

Describe Agent Cartier as the heroine of the novel and who might have served as the inspiration for her?

I wanted to make Angelina Cartier out to show her as a brave, headstrong and intelligent personality. Although Sean is the true hero of the book, I felt that she would have to have an alpha personality to be able to cope with Sean and Jake.

What inspired you to write the story and how did you do research for it?

I’ve wanted to write a book for quite a while but I never seemed to have enough time. That’s probably why it took me a while to write it. As far as research, my wife and I have been lucky enough to be able to travel around the country. I was also lucky enough to meet several people who had a lot of personal experience with several of the places that are in the book.

What is your own career background and did it help in the creation of the story for “Keepers”?

My own experience as a contractor means that my entire life I have had to interact with many people, and I do enjoy talking with them and hearing some of their stories. As a private pilot the thing that is stressed by instructors the most is what to do in an emergency. That along with being drilled on how to keep the plane in the air and generally flying it.

Are you preparing a sequel to “Keepers” and what is the progress in writing that story?

Yes, as a matter of fact I’ve already started to write the sequel. So far I’m on Chapter 3. I’m hoping that I can make it even more exciting than “Keepers.”
