CordeValle Golf Resort in San Martin is the home of the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open, to be played July 4-10.

Holland,Jeff-mugStarting July 4 and going for a week, the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open will bring the world’s best female golfers to the South Valley to compete at the CordeValle Golf Resort in San Martin. Millions of golf fans around the world will watch the competition on television and through the sports news and will learn about what Morgan Hill, Gilroy and the entire South County have to offer as a tourist destination.

To make this event a success, the U.S. Open will require a team of local people volunteering their time and talent in various roles that will make sure everything runs smoothly.

Local businesses including retail shops and restaurants are encouraged to get involved in connecting themselves to the spirit of this major sporting event.

Morgan Hill Life asked Jeff Holland, the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open vice president and CordeValle director of sales and marketing, about the volunteering jobs as well as how local businesses can participate.

What type of program do you have for local people to volunteer for the U.S. Women’s Open and how do they get into the program?

We love volunteers, and they are an essential part of making the U.S. Women’s Open Championship week successful. The easiest way to become a volunteer is to visit our official website and register there. It only takes a minute and you receive all sorts of perks, not to mention weeklong access to the championship.

What types of jobs are open for volunteers to participate in?

Volunteers are needed for more than a dozen committees, including VIP transportation services, laser operators, admissions, walking scorers, marshals and merchandise, which is always pretty popular since it’s inside an air-conditioned tent.

Why might local people want to get involved in the volunteer program, especially young people?

Volunteering is a lot of fun: you get to meet new people, spend time outdoors and experience a premier golf championship from a new vantage point.

Many people volunteer with friends or in groups to make it a week-long getaway. We offer standard bearer volunteer spots exclusively to juniors 17 and younger, which is great for young people to experience walking a championship course next to the world’s best golfers.

How might local companies such as businesses and stores in Gilroy and Morgan Hill get into the spirit of the U.S. Women’s Open and promote it locally?

We’ve distributed window clings and stickers to the Chambers of Commerce, which make for easy ways to say to the public, “I support this unique event that takes place in my hometown!”

You’ll see more promotions — on street signs, in newspapers, on radio and television — as we get closer to the championship. We encourage Gilroy and Morgan Hill residents to take a look at open volunteering positions, group ticket packages or simply come out for a day or two to witness this rare event right here in their backyard at CordeValle.

What opportunities are available for local businesses to help sponsor the U.S. Women’s Open?

We have some great hospitality packages that make it easy for local businesses to support the championship and get their name and staff involved. Our Champions Club is a unique way to position your business inside the clubhouse during the championship, next to a variety of local and regional businesses.

We offer weekly and daily hospitality offerings on our official website, 2016uswomensopen.com.
