Morgan Hill will have its own “brew-ha-ha” when students from Sobrato High School’s drama club perform improvisational comedy routines starting at noon at GVA Cafe prior to the kickoff of the Sept. 14 Brew Crawl hosted by the Morgan Hill Downtown Association.

The students welcome those who love to laugh and want to support the comedy improv program to attend and provide a suggested donation of $10. Funds raised by the one-hour performance will help high school drama students pay to participate in the High School League Workshop program through the ComedySportz franchise. Sobrato students participated in last year’s workshop through funds donated by Anritsu Company and local resident Nancy Lowe.

Calvin Nuttall, a 17-year-old Sobrato senior involved with the drama club, participated in the ComedySportz workshop last year and said he gained much from the program. He is organizing the Sept. 14 performance with fellow drama club students.

“Comedy improv is a theatrical art format where people get on stage and duel it out with their wits,” Nuttall said. “It’s different from standup comedy because you have to think on your feet and react to people around you and make humorous scenes working together with your comedy improv teammates. You learn to play off each other.”

Developing comedy improv skills helps young people learn to be more creative by thinking outside the box, he said. Students also learn to work together, learn how to play with words and develop confidence by performing in front of an audience.

“It definitely gives you confidence and an ability to react to people around you and seem unfazed,” he said. “And it helps you roll with the punches, not just on the stage, but every day.”
