Hooray for Morgan Hill’s Mighty Mushrooms, an all-star team from the Morgan Hill Pony Baseball Shetland division. The Mighty Mushrooms in July fell just short of the Pony Baseball Northern California World Series title for their division made up of 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds. They played July 2 to 5 in Seaside.
From June 5 to July 5 this team had seven practices, played two scrimmages and played nine games.
“That’s close to a full regular season of Shetland baseball in just 31 days,” said Team Manager Bob Van Boening. “This schedule would have been too much for most teams at this age, but these boys were always excited to be out there and played hard every day. The experience of playing baseball with and against the top players improved their baseball knowledge and skills, but more importantly it taught them life lessons about sportsmanship and what it means to be a true teammate.”
The team got a special recognition from Mayor Steve Tate at the start of the Aug. 5 City Council meeting.

Who can beat the sweet-tooth combination of vino and desserts?
In celebration of the first-year anniversary of the Wine Trail, the Morgan Hill Lions Club will hold a special college scholarship fundraiser dessert sale at Morgan Hill Cellars (1645 San Pedro Drive) from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday Aug. 29. Gourmet sweets from Ladera Grill, Marie Callender’s, as well as Morgan Hill Cellar’s famous raspberry wine sundaes will be served. Live music will entertain guests as they enjoy their wine and dessert, with the extra satisfaction of knowing their confection craving is helping to support local high school seniors heading to college.

We’re hog wild about Harry the Hog, the Clover Foundation’s “heritage hog” raised by San Martin resident Alexis Budde. Harry was exhibited at the Santa Clara County Fair this month, and chosen for the special honor which earns Budde a $4,000 scholarship.
Budde graduated from Live Oak High School last spring and will attend Colorado State University to study agriculture.
As part of her advocacy through the Clover Foundation, Budde has been speaking at the Farm Bureau and local events to educate people about high schooler involvement in agriculture.
“As part of raising the heritage hog scholarship, they wanted me to talk about youth agriculture applications because there’s only three high schools in the county that actually have agriculture as part of the curriculum,” she told us.
