Curtain Up: “Vanya and Sonia and Marsha and Spike”

By Camille Bounds

South Valley Civic Theatre gathered a group of their talented actors to bring Christopher Durang’s 2013 Tony award-winning, very humorous comedy to The Morgan Hill Playhouse. With a sprinkling of Chekhov here and there throughout the play with outrages moments, amusing dialogue and interesting characters that keeps the action moving at a steady pace.

Directed by Myra F. Kaelin we find a brother (Vanya-Scott Lynch) and sister (Sonia – Adrianne Wilkinson) bemoaning the facts of their dull life when their glamorous successful aging movie star sister who supports them – (Marsha – Denee Lewis) descends on their boring existence bringing along her very young toy-boy friend (Spike- Tyler Savin) to shake things up. To add to the hysteria their housekeeper (Cassandra -Roberta Vinkhuyzen) keeps everyone on edge with her doomsday prophecies that keep coming true.. Mix in a innocent young cute neighbor (Nina – Krista Warner) and the plot as they say thickens.

The delightful well done, detailed set is a pleasant addition with good lighting, sound and costumes making for a delightful performance.

“Vanya and Sonia and Marsha and Spike” will keep you laughing and perhaps thinking about your future.
