“Sister Act” is a fun and upbeat show with a positive message about faith

“Sister Act” is a musical based on the hit 1992 film with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater that stared Whoopi Goldberg. Broadway by the Bay is performing this upbeat and fun show until Aug. 25.

“Sister Act” tells the story of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who ends up cloistered as a nun in the nearby church to protect her from her gangster married boyfriend. He sees her witness his shooting his associate and decides she has to go.

She of course upsets the daily routine of the nunnery and is sent off to take part in the churches choir which is so bad it keeps the congregation from services. She, of course, changes that and helps the choir find their voices and brings the church and the gangster to their deserved ends.

Bethany Deal’s costumes fit the time with Scenic Designer’s Mark Mendeleson’s applicable set, with Michael Oesch’s lighting and Jon Hayward and Gino Vellandi’s’s sound. Nicolas Perez leads a fine orchestra to bring in a solid production.

Choreographer Riette Burdick delivers the wildly energetic routines. Erica Wyman Abrahamson directs the production with a wide open hand that keeps everyone moving at a breathless pace.

“Sister Act’s” energetic cast gives the audience the best in a fabulous musical that entertains.
