Winning projects show career skills gained

For the fourth year in a row, the Gavilan College Computer Graphics and Design program took home honors and awards from the California State Fair, which was held in Sacramento at the end of July.
CGD students garnered five California State Fair Golden Bear rosettes and awards. The students’ projects, judged by industry professionals, were on display through July 28.
The awards included one first place rosette, one GoEngineer SolidWorks prize, two second place rosettes, and one third place rosette This competition was open to all industrial technology and career education students at California’s 112 community colleges
CGD instructor Colette McLaughlin, who coordinated the students’ entries for the fair, said the recognition for their hard work means a lot.
The awards are:
Jonathan Hamilton
First Place, Solic Model Rendering: Johnathon Hamilton, of Gilroy, won a first place rosette and a GoEngineer Award for his rendering of an interchangeable double-barreled gun. His technical 3D modeling and presentation skills are preparing him to achieve his goal of a career in animation.
Second Place, Solid Model Rendering: Frank Ramero, from Morgan Hill, hopes to become a graphic designer. Ramero used SolidWorks to design and engineer a functional portable wheelchair ramp, and applied graphic design to visually communicate how his invention improves access for wheelchair-users.
Second Place, CAD 3D Pictorial Rendering: Desiree Villescaz, from Gilroy, entered a project called “Dream House.” In the spring, Villescaz worked with other students in her Environmental Design class to develop designs proposals for Comstock Community Farm in Hollister.
Third Place, Solid Model Rendering: Steven Hua, from San Martin, who previously won highest honors in architectural technology, was awarded another rosette this year for his rendered exploded views of an elevator door part.
Hua is developing design, engineering and visual communication skills to help him enter a career related to architecture and/or mechanical engineering with hopes of working on transportation systems.
