The Music Tree will close at the end of October with a huge store-wide clearance and reopen in the near future at a yet-to-be determined site.

What started as a little violin shop on Main Avenue in Morgan Hill 40 years ago has gone through many changes over the years, including a move to its current location and enormous growth into a full-service music store serving everyone’s musical interests at all levels.

Owner Darin Dixon seemed very positive when we sat down to chat about the new development that will be taking place at the Granada Theater and his adjacent building on Monterey Road between First and Second streets in downtown Morgan Hill.

“The Music Tree will be closing at the end of October due to the sale of the property, but The Music Tree will live on for many more years to come and continue to provide the surrounding communities with lessons, rentals, service and sales of new and pre-owned musical instruments, accessories and band instruments too. As a pillar of the local music scene, The Music Tree has always focused on serving the communities of Hollister, Gilroy, San Martin, south San Jose and Morgan Hill and we are looking for a convenient space so we can continue to provide those communities with what we are best known for.”

Dixon is seriously contemplating a move south of Morgan Hill with a keen interest in downtown Gilroy which would put him close to his music venue The District. By moving near his nightclub, he can additionally offer his customers The District as a place to hold clinics, seminars, workshops and student recitals. This would also put him in a more central location to better serve his total South County customer base.

The Music Tree currently uses as many as 20 music instructors and plans to continue to be the hub for music lessons in the South County. Dixon said he will also be happy to offer his students and teachers the luxury of practice spaces with full climate control which has not been the case in his current location.

The Music Tree is planning to hold a store-wide moving clearance sale in mid to late October with “scary” deals just in time to celebrate the Halloween season, Dixon said. The annual Halloween sale is something he has done for many years, but he says this one will be the biggest of all and the timing is perfect since he’d rather sell his current merchandise than have to move it all.

The Music Tree is currently located in the Downtown Mall between First and Second street in Morgan Hill. Get ready to save on lots of musical gear and accessories.

On another note:
Mama Mia’s Restaurant has decided to extend its popular Patio Music Series at least into October with thoughts of bringing it indoors during the winter season. Live music works well for its private parties and the patio is just a nice place to relax with excellent food and full bar.

The GVA Cafe continues to provide the most live music and the widest variety of musical genres to downtown Morgan Hill and will remain open during the street reconstruction that will be going on all around them.

In addition to GVA’s variety of music, it offers customers a nice mix of food including made-to-order pizzas fresh from Jimmy P’s Pizzeria. Stop in and enjoy a hot pizza pie.

So long and farewell to The Granada Theater and all the fantastic events they have brought to town. My friends who manage the Granada, Crystal, Gene, Stephen and Kenny, worked non-stop during this past year to bring top quality live entertainment and films to the two stages inside the theater.

I could feel their pain as they worked hard to move their belongings and then lock the red doors for the last time. A big thank you to all for creating a very happening entertainment outlet in downtown Morgan Hill. Oh, progress!
