Plastic is the most common element that is found in the ocean. It is harmful for the environment as it does not get break down easily and is often considered as food by various marine animals, including all types of birds and fish. All of the creeks and rivers that run through Santa Clara County connect to the San Francisco Bay and lead straight into the Pacific Ocean.
Last year, volunteers from all over Santa Clara County came together and picked up more than 50,000 lbs. of trash from local creeks. That weight is equivalent to 20 Honda Civics.
Come join other local citizens on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 9 a.m. to noon for the 25th Annual National River Cleanup Day.
The Santa Clara Valley Water District will supply all the necessary materials for cleanup (gloves, trash bags). Residents helping out should make sure to wear long pants and boots or sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
There are currently 48 cleanup sites to pick from throughout Santa Clara County. In Gilroy, sites are Uvas Creek and Coyote Lake. In Morgan Hill, sites are Anderson Lake at the Woodchoppers picnic area and West Little Llagas Creek.
