Story of Moses told in world premiere of new musical produced by TheatreWorks

Ramses (Jason Gotay – left) and Nefertari (Jamila Sabares-Klemm – right) look on while High Priest Hotep (Will Mann – center) chants the child’s prayer of protection over their new son in the world premiere of “The Prince of Egypt”

Just about everyone knows the ancient tale from the book Exodus of the life of a baby Moses being found by the Queen of Egypt in the bull rushes and the conflict with his brother Ramses up to the plagues and the parting of the Red Sea. TheatreWorks overwhelms to the ultimate with its world premiere production of this beloved biblical story in the musical “The Prince of Egypt.”

With top creative contributors, with a suburb spirited cast with the lyrics and music by multi-award-winning Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked”, “Godspell”, “Pippin” with an Academy Award for “When You Believe” from the movie “The Prince Of Egypt”) and book by Phillip LaZebnik, (“Pocahontas”, “Mulan”) and also Broadway and international award-winning director Scott Schwartz (Stephen’s son), “The Prince of Egypt” was developed from the Dreamworks Animated film The Prince Of Egypt to a full stage musical. The production is presented in collaboration with Fredericia Theater in Denmark where it will travel to open in April 2018.

The music under the direction of William Liberatore and his eight first-rate musicians sound like a 30-piece orchestra. They bring Schwartz’s score to attention getting upscale rhythms with attentive ballads. The cast delivers the music with wonderfully blended force. Mike Billings sets up the lighting and Cliff Caruthers sound touches everything where it should and blends each scene with perfection.

Brennyn Lark (Tzipporah – Moses’ wife) is outstanding with her dancing and gorgeous voice. The amazing dancers under choreographer Sean Cheeseman recreate magnificent most creative stallion drawn chariots, burning bushes, rivers, a well and parting of the waters, they are the scenery and props. This is the most supreme choreography I have ever seen on any stage.

This is a huge production with more than 100 costumes and a solid talented 28 member cast. TheatreWorks as always delivers a first-class production that should not be missed.
