Published in the June 20 – July 3, 2018 issue of Morgan Hill Life
With this issue, Morgan Hill Life proudly begins its sixth year of publishing stories and opinion columns to inform the South Valley community about current events. From our hearts, we thank the many people and businesses who have so far been a part of our journey.
More than ever, America needs local news sources dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for everyone. Citizens need to have fact-based knowledge about the issues that impact their lives and the leaders who represent them in government offices. This is especially true during election times when we fill out our ballots.
We seek to serve through the medium of print and the Internet the needs of our fellow South Valley residents. In the past five years, we’ve published 130 issues chronicling our community’s story. We have worked with students training them as “junior journalists” to report on their schools. We have published opinion columns by students that give them a voice to share with the community about the quality of their classroom experience.
We also strive to serve the quality of life of residents by promoting the activities of the numerous nonprofit organizations in the South Valley. On the front page of each issue of Morgan Hill Life, we publish a profile story giving attention to various nonprofits and a fundraiser event or other activity they wish to educate our readers about. This encourages more public involvement with these groups.
We also provided newspaper space to promote culture in South Valley. The talented artists, musicians and actors provide many opportunities for residents to enjoy local music, a theatrical performance, or a painting or photography exhibit. The arts and entertainment abound in our region. Our stories encourage our readers to take the time to go with friends and family to these performances.
People tell us often how much they like Morgan Hill Life and the hyper-local, quality-of-life stories published in every issue. We thank them for their encouragement. But we also encourage them in return to help us keep our newspaper in operation by patronizing the local businesses and other organizations who market their products and services on our pages. Putting out a newspaper every other week comes with a cost in production, print and distribution. Every issue is mailed by the U.S. Postal Service to more than 18,000 addresses, including homes and businesses. We also place nearly 2,000 additional copies of each issue of Morgan Hill in various locations for readers to enjoy — including local hotels, coffee shops, and the public library. Many of these copies are placed in Gilroy and San Martin locations as well.
America more than ever needs newspapers. The framers of our government in 1787 saw a need for a free press to protect information flow to the people. They placed that protection under constitutional law. The press is the only industry to enjoy that privilege.
We hope you agree with us that sustaining a high quality of life for you and every other resident of the South Valley requires a source of high-quality news and information. We hope you will support our endeavors as Morgan Hill Life continues to grow.
