“… it is imperative that the council and the community understand that the city is not yet in the financial position to fully address its aging public infrastructure … and water. Fire Services, funding is needed … Police Services, funding is needed …”

— Christina Turner, Morgan Hill city manager, city budget, page 30

In the past four years, as a board member for the Chamber of Commerce, I have been devoted to understanding policy-making, the budgeting process, and relationships with other agencies. The time is now for council, in collaboration with staff, to address the significant financial and policy issues we face.

Top Financial Issues: We need funding for up to six additional police officers; the build out and operation of a third fire station; improving the quality of roads; completion of the Hale Avenue extension; providing upgrades and capacity to our sewer and water system; reducing the $50 million in unfunded pension liability.

I support the development of a comprehensive plan that focuses on growing revenues rather than adding or raising taxes. Adding jobs is key. My experience in public corporations and in my own businesses has given me the experience to meaningfully understand and address these issues.

Top Policy Issues: High-Speed Rail — We have ONLY influence on the route. We need everyone’s involvement to prevent it from coming through the center of downtown.

Housing — The state has introduced legislation that could seriously impact Measure S, which limits residential growth, or possibly override our city’s authority to limit residential housing entirely unless we meet new affordable housing targets.

Internet Broadband — In July 2017, I presented to city staff an overview of the need to develop a public/private partnership to expand and improve services.
