Carol Gittens

Our students deserve to attend high quality TK-12 schools that promote health, safety, and wellbeing.  As MHUSD Area 4 Trustee since 2018, I am a champion for our students and families. I support the superintendent, school leaders, teachers, and staff of our district. Together, we must continue to strengthen the social and emotional wellbeing of our district’s children post-pandemic; to engage parents and community partners; to increase opportunities for English language and bilingual learners; to increase overall literacy rates; and to promote college and career readiness of our graduates.  I bring 30+ years of experience as a college professor and teacher educator.  I am committed to equity, inclusion, diversity, and belonging for all in our district community.  I have experience and understanding of what is needed to improve the education system. I have mentored and supervised teachers to promote critical thinking across mathematics, language arts, reading, science, social studies, and the arts. I have collaborated with teachers, librarians, and community leaders to implement literacy programs to serve students who are academically at risk. I have led parent and peer education programs serving economically disadvantaged families.  I seek re-election because I want to continue to uphold funding for high quality educational programs and district enhancement projects.  As Trustee for Area 4, I have endorsed practices that enabled our district to adapt and be resilient during the greatest education challenge of the modern era – the COVID-19 pandemic that required the rapid transition to remote learning and ensured a gradual safe return to in-person learning.  In my second term as Area 4 trustee I will continue to endorse funding and programming that allows every teacher and school in MHUSD to have the resources, facilities, extra-curricular programs, and opportunities to provide a rich and effective learning environment for our children.
