Morgan Hill Unified School District Candidate John Horner

John Horner

In 2018, I promised to serve students, empower parents, respect educators, and appreciate taxpayers. My priorities remain the same, but now I have additional knowledge and perspective gained through experience and professional development. These past four years have been filled with opportunities and challenges, including a Superintendent transition and Covid response. Our school board, staff and school sites have come through these trials and positioned our school district to serve students even better. My fellow school board members unanimously selected me as this year’s Board President and likewise unanimously endorsed my re-election.

Our board has thoughtfully targeted recent state funding increases (something I’ve consistently advocated for through chairing the County School Board Association’s Legislative Action Committee) into hiring professionals to bring back programs and resources previously lost during decades of budget cuts. This results in more counselors, performing arts classes, electives, and career-oriented classes along with the addition of a seventh class period in the high schools to provide additional elective, advancement and/or remediation opportunities. Additionally, all elementary schools in MHUSD now have full time PE, art and music teachers and dedicated preparation time for teachers. While we have added these new positions, we have also given significant raises to all employees, including 7.5% last year alone.

My track record of effective community service includes creating the “Rock the Mock” high school interview training program which has served nearly 2,000 students to date, supporting the South Valley Science Initiative/Fair through multiple iterations, leading the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce’s financial and operational revival from 2013 through 2019, and being a founding board member of both the Edward Boss Prado Foundation (501c3) and the Morgan Hill Kiwanis Youth Fund (501c3). I would be honored to earn your vote, and together do what is required to support all students. //hornerformorganhill.org/
