Sushi anyone? That’s how Randy Musterer of Sushi Confidential rolls. Born in San Diego, from age 13 to 23 work life was on fishing boats. He then spent 17-plus years in cancer research. As a side gig for 10 years, he worked a couple nights a week at mom and pop sushi restaurants where he learned the craft. Mastering it, by 2010 customers kept suggesting he open a restaurant. So, through 2012 Randy started with pop-up sushi at a private level, ergo the name “Sushi Confidential.”
The brand’s first location opened in downtown Campbell in 2012. Since then, they’ve been on San Pedro Square in San Jose and have concessions at SAP Center, Shoreline Amphitheater, and Silver Creek Sports Complex. While working the Shoreline, people would ask when he was going to open in their city. Then four years ago while working at the Shoreline location, multiple concert goers stressed the next location should be in Morgan Hill. Eventually, after years of searching, the perfect spot downtown was found, — and his vision became reality opening April 10.
Over several years of making sushi, Randy’s met a lot of customers. In a sense he’s interviewed 1,000s learning the likes and dislikes of sushi, its experience, and its typical venue. Some comments were how sushi restaurants close too early, none were open for lunch, they have no flatscreens or music, and typical sushi staff isn’t personable.
Aspiring to be shrimply the best, Sushi Confidential is working to meet all those wants and be at the industry’s forefront. Those in need of a vegetarian diet don’t have to settle for a boring avocado roll any longer. Sushi Con’s menu meets theirs as well as vegan and keto lovers’ needs. Some people may not like sushi, but their friends and family do. Randy’s got that covered with a full kitchen serving offerings for all. And don’t forget that all locations have a full bar.
It’s common knowledge that finding restaurant staff is difficult these days. Unlike at his other locations, most of his Morgan Hill staff were born and raised here. This creates a vested interest in the restaurant’s success at providing an awesome experience.
Wanna have fun and learn how to roll? Invite Randy’s team to a Sushi Showcase home party, or maybe instead of going to a ball game, get your boss to schedule a Sushi Making Team Building experience. Or how about a catering event at your home or business?
Randy sees his establishment as a local’s hangout. Some customers come in several times a week just for a drink, appetizer, or catch a game. They even offer a Local Love menu with as example the Morgan Hill Baked Mushroom Roll and an assortment of local wine and beer.
Randy enjoys giving back to the community. This year he introduced a Sushi Confidential $1,000 scholarship program to students of Live Oak and Sobrato. So, when you’re thinking miso, or hungry for sushi and a cocktail, think Sushi Confidential.
