Weather and Flood Updates

Sunday, January 8, 2023, 4:30 pm

We hope you are staying dry and safe through the storms. With the additional rain we have received this weekend, and in preparation for an even more impactful storm moving in tomorrow and Tuesday, City teammates are collaborating with Valley Water with the common goal of minimizing the impact on our community members with a concentrated concern on our vulnerable populations and high flooding risk areas.

Flood Warnings

Santa Clara County, Office of Emergency Management, has issued a flood warning for the watershed areas of Uvas Reservoir, including those living:

  • South of Uvas Reservoir, including Thousand Trails and Uvas Pines RV Park
  • South of Sycamore Drive and Watsonville Road
  • Homes south of Lions Peak Lane
  • South of Day Road and Geri Lane
  • Watsonville Road and HWY 152

What does this mean? A flood warning is a notification to the community to prepare for the possibility of an evacuation. Please plan what route you will take and where you will go, gather necessary documents, pets, and other essential belongings, and ensure you are signed up to receive emergency notifications via AlertSCC.

What We Are Doing

The Public Services team is proactively pumping water from various areas to expand capacity in the City and flushing storm drains where issues occur. We are also working with Valley Water to ensure maximum flow is available in their storm facilities. Valley Water is proactively sending out flood warning information to potentially impacted neighborhoods, and we are amplifying their messaging through our social media channels. The major flood zones we have experienced have pre-staged signs and barricades ready for quick use to notify the community of road closures or hazardous areas.

Our Police and Fire Departments are monitoring senior developments and mobile home parks. Additionally, our Police, Fire, and Housing teams are contacting unhoused individuals in the field and handing out emergency backpacks and shelter information. VTA continues to offer free rides to warming centers. Both the Police and Communications teams are providing relevant and timely updates on storm preparation and response tips.
