The Sobrato High School ComedySports Improv Team will face off against the San Benito High School ComedySports Team to entertain audiences with on-the-spot comic performances the evening of Friday May 23 at Sobrato High School’s theater.
High school-level ComedySports teams are formed as an after-school, extra curricular activity, and made up of drama class students as well as students who want to build their comedy skills, said Sobrato High School junior Calvin Nuttall, a member of the team.
ComedySports is a performance sport of the verbal and physical comedy variety. The students put much work and practice into building their improv skills to compete in comic “games.”
To play the games, a red and white striped shirt, whistle-wielding referee oversees the entire event and enforces the “rules,” Nuttall said. “But many of the rules are meant to be broken in the name of laughter and often include the challenge of the opposing teams players to both remember the rules and know exactly how to break them to the amusement of the other team and especially the audience,” he said.
Much like the influence that fans in the stands can give to players on the fields during various team sporting events, the audience can, if they wish, provide their input in the improv games, In fact, they are encouraged to do so.
A donation of $10 is requested and the proceeds will be split between the performing schools to help support comedy improv program for high school students.
