The South Valley Young Life group will hold a $10-a-ticket spaghetti dinner and auction fundraiser to raise money to help send middle school and high school students to camp this summer. The dinner will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday May 31 at The Grange Hall, 40 E. Fourth St., in downtown Morgan Hill.

Young Life is a non-denominational Christian outreach organization for teenagers. It is international and has been around for more than 70 years.

“We started Young Life here in the South Valley five years ago,” said Donna Zimmerman, area director for the organization. “Kids come to what we call Club on Monday nights. We average between 60 to70 kids from Live Oak, Sobrato, Christopher, and Gilroy high schools every week. Leaders also spend time going to where kids are, hanging out and showing them they care about them.”

The spaghetti dinner will raise money to take students to Woodleaf, a Young Life-owned camp in the Sierra mountains northeast of Sacramento. The students will spend seven days there.

“When kids go to camp they say it is the best week of their life,” Zimmerman said. “They are taken out of the hectic life they are surrounded by and placed in a beautiful surrounding with no distractions. They do not have cell phones or other electronics to distract them.”

Camp is a life-changing experience for many who go, she said. Some students would not get the opportunity to go without the help of scholarships provided by donations and Young Life fundraising events.

People interested in making a monetary donation to South Valley Young Life can send it South Valley Young Life at 690 Black Prince Ct., Morgan Hill, CA 95037, or donate online at southvalley.younglife.org.
