The South Valley Civic Theatre recently announced its 2014-2015 line-up of musicals and dramatic plays, with the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Proof” opening Sept. 12.
SCVT’s adult drama for the season is “Proof,” the winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize and it also received a Tony Award for best play. The drama takes place on the eve of a young woman’s 25th birthday. Catherine has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Over the long weekend of the play, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draws Catherine to question how much of her father’s madness — or genius — will she inherit.
“Little Women” is the small family musical that starts its run Nov. 21. The timeless classic, written originally as a novel by Louisa May Alcott 140 years ago, tells the story of the March sisters’ journey from childhood to maturity during the American Civil War.
Opening Feb. 20, “Shrek the Musical” is the teen musical based on the DreamWorks animation film about an ogre who shows up with a cynical donkey to rescue a feisty princess in a land of famous fairy-tale characters.
SCVT’s children’s musical opens April 24. “Seuissical Jr” brings ll the favorite Dr. Seuss characters including Horton the Elephant and the Cat and the Hat. The story is about how the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community emerge triumphant.
The theater season closes with the adult musical “The Producers,” the comical story of a down-on-his-luck producer named Max Bialystock and a mousy accountant named Leo Bloom.
SVCT season tickets run from $40 to $90 depending on the package purchased.
