The Gavilan College Educational Foundation will host its second annual Sowing Seeds, Nurturing Dreams fundraising gala Saturday April 24. This event raises money for scholarships and emergency funds for food, water and transportation for students in need.

“The purpose (of the foundation) is to work with the community to support students and programs of the college beyond what is provided by state funding,” said event Co-Chair Jan Bernstein Chargin.

Sowing Seeds, Nurturing Dreams benefits Gavilan students and the college by giving the students the financial help they need to pursue their education, she said. The foundation is a nonprofit organization started in 1994 to raise money through donations for scholarships and student services. Its mission is to find more financial resources for students, faculty, and the various services the school provides.

Sowing Seeds, Nurturing Dreams Co-chair Mary Ann Sanidad said the event raised $15,000 last year. This money was split between scholarships and emergency funds that have helped a number of students. The event will be held on the Gavilan campus where organizers will transform the cafeteria into a festive place. The food and wine are all donated from local restaurants and wineries. There will also be a silent auction and raffle of items donated from local businesses.

This event reminds members of the community that everyone can help students get an education, Sanidad said. “We are all about students being successful here,” she said.

Bernstein Chargin described the night as a “great chance to enjoy a night in a beautiful setting.”
