St. Catherine student to study at John Hopkins

Will Waxman, a 5th grader from St. Catherine’s School, was recently recognized by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth as one of the most academically gifted young students in the nation for his exceptional performance on a rigorous above-grade level test.

At a statewide ceremony held last month at Loyola Marymount University, Waxman received High Honors recognition for achieving one of the highest scores on CTY’s International Talent Search, which invites 40,000 of the most advanced students from around the world to apply. During the talent search, gifted young learners take above-grade level tests as a means of gaining insight into their advanced abilities. Waxman’s score placed him among the top of even this select group of high performers.

Since 1979 CTY has identified young people of great academic promise through their annual talent search. CTY alumni of local note include Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, and Sergey Brin, the cofounder of Google.

“Today we face critical global problems that require the best minds of the future to solve using discipline, creativity, and innovation,” says Elaine Tuttle Hansen, executive director of CTY. “It’s inspiring and reassuring to see this group of some of the best and brightest students emerging and to know that they will become tomorrow’s thought leaders and innovators.”

This summer, Waxman has been invited to return to Loyola Marymount University for a three-week course on Data and Chance, one of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth’s programs for academically gifted students. In this course, students develop a greater understanding of data and chance, two areas of mathematics that easily transfer from the classroom to the real world. Students conduct experiments and generate data which they display in graphs, charts, and tables in order to compare the effects of particular variables. They also explore probability, the study of chance, to learn how to use numerical data to predict future events.
