The holiday season is upon us and “The Santaland Diaries” one-man show extravaganza is back for fun laughs to get us in the spirit of Christmas.
Adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello from an essay by David Sedaris, Max Tachis is the strapped-for-cash actor who takes a job as “Crumpet the Elf” at Macy’s Department Store’s Santaland. His amusing performance is more edgy and a little on the dark side that takes humor on a verge of adult wit. This tells you that the show is only for grown-up elves.
The colorful set by scenic designer Christopher Fitzer is the show scene stealer. Charming to look at as you enter the intimate Lohman Theater at Foothill College, it holds your attention as you peer into the delightful detail. Audience members enjoyed taking photos sitting in the Santa chair with its enchanting back round before the show.
Director Jeffrey Lo keeps Tachis in a low key mode, spewing his discomfort in his latest role while trying to keep his dignity as he ushers scads of screaming, spoilt, crying kids, and ridiculous adults trying to get a photo with a grumpy Santa. TheatreWorks’ production of “The Santaland Diaries” offers a lively, different look at Christmas that entertains in an unusual way.
