Why are you running for Santa Clara County Supervisor and what makes you qualified to represent District 1? 

As mayor and a retired firefighter, I am uniquely qualified to be the next Supervisor for District 1. I have been an advocate for South County while serving on different boards including VTA, the Caltrain Local Policy Maker Group, and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. While serving, my top priority has been making sure that South County gets its fair and equitable share of regional resources. I have a track record of getting things done and I know my work at the local and regional level will allow me to hit the ground running on day one on the Board of Supervisors.

What in your opinion is the single most important challenge specific to South Valley residents and how do you intend to address it?

Emerging with momentum from the economic crisis that was caused by the pandemic will be a challenge in of itself, but the problems of traffic congestion, access to healthcare, preserving open space, the threat of wildfires, affordable housing, water supply, climate change and access to education are all important issues that will need to be addressed. As mayor, I am working with the County to address these issues and as Supervisor I will continue to work with all levels of government to deliver for South County residents.

How do you intend to protect and enhance the unique quality of life for the people of the South Valley?

A top priority is protecting open space in South County. Roughly 70% of the county’s open space is in District 1. I have a track record of preserving open space in Morgan Hill. It is important to capitalize on the uniqueness of South County including the wineries, small businesses, farmland and parks. It will be key after we come out of the pandemic to help businesses get back on their feet. Just as I have as mayor, I will continue to work with partners at the state, federal and local levels. Additionally, we must make sure the County is able to maintain the vital social safety net that it provides to residents and families in need throughout the county.
