Lofgren meets with students to discuss current events

Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren visited Oakwood High School to meet with students participating in the SIFMA Foundation stock market game, the Capitol Hill Challenge, a nationwide financial education competition that partners members of Congress to work with high school teams. Oakwood’s Economics Club was founded this year by sophomore Abhi Karthikeyan and has since become a stimulating addition to the ever-growing array of extracurriculars that students can pursue.
The entire school was excited to welcome Congresswoman Lofgren to campus May 2, though this was not her first encounter with Oakwood students, having just met the eighth grade class in Washington, D.C on their annual trip to the nation’s capitol.
After a brief tour of the school, Lofgren headed to the high school to meet with the Economics Club to discuss current events and the roles she plays in Congress. They were joined by the AP U.S. Government class, which had just learned about the different congressional committees and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get an in-depth view of American government at work.
The conversation extended beyond economics and delved into topics ranging from immigration reform to education and energy independence.
The students learned the importance of committees in getting legislation passed and listened as Lofgren gave insight on how she and her fellow representatives negotiate and compromise to pass a bill.
“It was a great experience meeting Congresswoman Lofgren,” said Abhi. “She was extremely inspirational and I admire how she is able to impact the government and the way policy is made in the public sector.”
All the students agreed that being able to meet a member of Congress was an invaluable opportunity and helped them become more informed and involved citizens.
