Robin Nielsen loves her life. It’s full of delicious food, nature, sports, adventures, her family and friends, love, music, community, and her dogs Sunshine and Floyd, she says. And she loves helping people regain a zest for their own lives by helping them understand how nutrition and lifestyle affects hormone balance through her Morgan Hill-based Juvenesence Grow Younger business.

Nielsen is a certified nutrition consultant and is board certified in holistic nutrition. She is a past board member and president of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals. With the New Year now here and many local residents deciding to reinvigorate their lives through exercise and nutrition, Morgan Hill Life asked Nielsen about how Juvenesence can help people enhance their lives in 2015.

You have a passion for helping people improve their lives through nutrition and lifestyle. What is your training in this area and why do you have a passion for what you do at Juvenescence with your clients?

I am quite passionate. That’s because my best training was running a multi-million dollar printing company with my husband for almost 20 years. We had 40 employees, were commuting, and raising a family. It was a busy, hectic time and I was feverishly looking for how to keep balance and health in my life without going crazy. I hate being sick – I think it’s so lonely and a terrible waste of time. We were fat, stressed and tired. One thing led to another. The results were nothing short of amazing and there was no turning back. My training is in functional nutrition from a hormone (endocrinology) perspective.

Describe the nutrition and supplement system that you provide through Juvenescence.

I specialize in helping people over 35 because that’s when hormones, brain chemistry and digestive chemicals really begin to decline. It’s very individual. Our bodies are somewhat of a mix between a bank account and a chemistry lab. Each person has “deposits” and “withdrawals.” I equate it to “using” versus “building.” Using too much causes illness while building helps us to stay healthy. Symptoms together with testing can be the best gauge of what’s going on. From there I suggest an eating plan, nutrients and changes to lifestyle that will help you to look and feel your best.

Is it possible to reverse physical aging and how does your approach help achieve that goal?

I love this question – it’s an absolute yes! The main reason I got into preventative, integrative health care is because I want everyone to know that aging doesn’t come with aches and pains, high blood pressure, belly fat, brain fog, heart disease, depression, anxiety, hot flashes and the end of intimacy. That’s what we accept but it’s not how it has to be. These symptoms are simply a result of poor choices we’ve made for ourselves over a long period of time – for whatever reason. You can reverse a lot of this in a short period of timed. for example, one of my clients dropped 90 points in her total cholesterol in just two weeks.

You are involved at Morgan Hill’s Anritsu Company with your 12 week “Get Your Groove On!” program helping the employees reach their health goals. Now you’re moving this program to the community. What is Get Your Groove On! and why might people want to come to your conference to find out more about it?

Being healthy is profitable and Anritsu gets that. I modeled this program after The Daniel Plan that was created by Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Daniel Amen and Dr. Mark Hyman for the Saddleback Church in Los Angeles. I interviewed Dr. Hyman and learned about the success of their program. I wanted to bring that same success to Morgan Hill. It’s been an incredibly successful program at Anritsu because those who participate really want to feel and look better. They lost weight, lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, got off the CPAP machine (for snoring problems), improved energy, reduced aches and pains, and enjoyed intimacy again along with many other successes. I’ve held the course there for two years with Theresa Kiernan and the results have been incredible. Community is really the magic that makes it successful.

With the New Year, people make resolutions to get back in shape. What mind-set would you recommend people develop to help them get into healthier habits in 2015?

Be grateful for what you have, and act “as if.” You get more of what you’re grateful for. But it can be a challenge to get motivated if you’re not feeling your best. A Catch-22 right? That’s why a program like Get Your Groove On is such a catalyst – you’re getting healthier with a community that is much bigger than yourself. You’re not alone. Even the healthiest of us have been where you are now and I’m proof it’s possible for you.

You’re involved with the Sexy Younger You tele-summit conference. Explain what this is and why you got involved with it.

I co-created SYY with Dr. Anna Cabeca, an age-management specialist and OB/GYN in Georgia. We reach people all over the world with our message of how to have vibrant health as we age. I’ve done more than 100 interviews with the world’s leading authorities on disease prevention and aging well. It’s been an incredible journey. My goal is to reach more than one million people. We need to know how to feel great so we can live the life we love purposefully and passionately.
