Although Gavilan College’s spring semester began Jan. 26, it’s not too late to sign up for a class that will help residents get ahead or explore a new academic or personal interest.

Credit classes starting in February and March include spreadsheets, basic programming, computer literacy and introduction to scriptwriting. Noncredit offerings include GED prep and English as a second language. There is no charge for noncredit classes.

This winter/spring community education catalog also features new classes and returning favorites. Choices include classes in digital photography, hiking, watercolor and dance, or learning to raise chickens in a suburban backyard and becoming a certified SCUBA diver. Budding artists can explore watercoloring. If local residents are thinking of starting a new career or enhancing their skills, they can look at some of Gavilan’s career training programs in water resource management, veterinary assistant, pharmacy technician, event management and basic bookkeeping.

Coming soon is a program in programmable logic controller (PLC) and electrical training. All modules will provide hands-on experience with industry-approved trainers as well as state-of-the-art equipment. Residents who are interested should call and ask to be added to the waiting list for this program. There are also many online community education course offerings and the secure website makes it possible to register for classes 24 hours a day, seven days a week and pay by credit card.
