Vietnam Veteran Eddie Bowers has organized the Veteran’s and Memorial day celebrations for nearly two decades. Above right: Al Simmons and Carl Schultz stand at attention during the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” May 25. The celebration included patriotic songs from local school children led by Karen Crane, who oversees the upcoming Patriotic Sing July 3 every year, a singing of the national anthem, a reading of the names of local residents who died serving, a prayer, veterans raising an American flag that belonged to World War II veteran Roy Quindt, and a performance of “Taps” to end the solemn ceremony. Morgan Hill residents and veterans Charles Hubbard and Terry Howell laid wreaths at the base of the memorial in the median on Monterey Road at First Street, which displays a series of plaques listing the names of local veterans who died while serving. The annual commemoration has gotten larger during the past decade, with people milling in the median and even standing on the east and west side of Monterey Road to watch the events. The next ceremony honoring members of the Armed Forces will take place Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
