Most of my music columns typically pertain to the local music scene which continues to thrive with live rock, country, blues, folk and acoustic music in Morgan Hill and the surrounding area. But I want to bring to your attention a completely different kind of music that will be coming to Morgan Hill Aug. 8, and it is absolutely free.

The Pueri Cantores of Daegu (pronounced: “pweary can tour us of day goo”) is the very first Gregorian Choir in South Korea. In their inaugural United States visit, they will be making their first stop on the tour at St. Catherine Church in Morgan Hill.

The group is composed of children and youth ages 10 to 17, and will perform a selection of sacred choral music, vocal Gregorian chants and music for hand bells.

This is a very different type of music but it is a very beautiful and the Korean children will warm your hearts with their amazing talent. St. Catherine Church, at 17400 Peak Ave., will be hosting the Pueri Cantores of Daegu, South Korea from August 6-10. Come support them at their American debut which starts right here in Morgan Hill at 7 p.m. Friday Aug. 8. The concert is absolutely free. The South Valley Symphony will be rolling out its 2014-2015 season titled “A Musician’s Journey” this fall and the line up of four concerts that conductor Anthony Quartuccio has planned for classical music fans is well worth attending.

“‘A Musician’s Journey’ traces the steps a musician takes from childhood to beyond the grave,” South Valley Symphony board member Chris Hopwood said, “Starting with music that illustrates Dreams & Aspirations, evolving to Traditions: New and Old, a tribute to the time when a musician is ready to try new things and express  a unique personality. In Musicians Among Us – Rising Stars we salute those young musicians in our community as our own rising stars. And the season finale concert will perform the music from the grand old masters: Beethoven, Vivaldi and Brahms as well as a more recent master, Aaron Copland.”

Among the highlights is the world premiere of a new work for orchestra that 2013 Sobrato High School student Chris Niemann has been commissioned to write by the symphony. This will be performed at the spring concert.

Our local symphony wants to encourage young people to learn to love concert music and so admission is free to kids and students with identification. The symphony has also been active in Morgan Hill Schools, with its musicians sharing the fun and fanfare of great works of music.

The symphony’s “Dreams And Aspirations” concert will be performed starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday Oct. 11 at the Gavilan College Theater. This will be followed by their Winter Concert “Traditions Old and New” at 4 p.m. Sunday Dec. 14 and their Spring Concert “Musicians Among Us, Rising Stars” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday March 7 also at the Gavilan College Theater. General admission is $20.

The South Valley Symphony will once again present its extremely popular Mission Concert “A Master’s Legacy” at 4 p.m. Sunday May 10 – Mother’s Day – at the historic Mission San Juan Bautista. The concert will feature music by Vivaldi (“Vivaldi By Twos”) and the ticket will also include a rose garden reception following the concert. General admission tickets for the Mission concert will be priced at $35 per person and children and students with ID will be free.
