The classic story of how a glass slipper brings a young woman and Prince Charming together was brought to life on the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse stage with two special productions of “Cinderella Kids” Dec 8.

The show was performed by home school students under the direction of Carol Romo, owner of the Theater Fun company that teaches local children how to sing, dance and act in musical dramas.

Seventh-grader Fiona McNulty played “Cinderella,” the heroine of the story who finds romance with a little help from her Fairy Godmother, played by Annemarie Conlin. McNulty called putting on a play a “team effort” where everyone works together to create the magic of storytelling.

“I just think that it’s amazing when you act you get a chance to be somebody in real life you would never get to be,” she said. “In real life you only get to be one person. I think Cinderella is a dreamer. She never gives up. She’s always optimistic and enthusiastic.”

McNulty said everyone worked hard spending Tuesday mornings for 13 weeks rehearsing under Romo’s guidance.

“It was so much fun,” she said. “Carol is amazing and she’s very patient and she’s the best. She’s very nice and she explains things really well and makes sure we all have fun but we’re also disciplined.”

Home school student Abhishek Krishnan played Prince Charming, Cinderella’s romantic interest, as “sort of a show-off” who has to deal with family issues.

“His father the king is always crazy and the grand duke is always bending and cracking,” he said. “The king has some very odd ideas and thinks the prince hasn’t grown up yet.”

Krishnan has performed in previous Theater Fun productions “Frog and Toad”, “Aladdin,” and “Willie Wonka.” This is his first starring role.
“It’s fun. Everyone works together,” he said. “It’s amazing how Miss Carol can bring a bunch of random people together and tell the story.”

Romo said her production of “Cinderella” is an abridged version of the Walt Disney animated film with some added scenes she’s included to expand the story with comedy.

Cinderella’s step sisters Anastaia (played by Naomi Beaudoin) and Drizzella (played by Payton Reil) get the story going with a comical sibling rivalry, wrestling on the ground as they fight each other.

“They were hysterical,” Romo said. “The mother is trying to remain calm and keep her composure but she can’t.”

Theater Fun will begin auditioning in January for a 14-week once a week morning rehearsal for home school students for its next production, “Jungle Book” which will be performed May 17. For more information, contact Romo at [email protected].
