Morgan Hill police officer Billy Jurevich won two gold medals in motocross and Grand Prix events at the annual United States Police and Fire Olympics, held June 17 and 18 in San Diego. The motocross event consisted of two 20-minute races and the Grand Prix event consisted of an hour-long race on two tracks. Nice job officer Jurevich. Wonder if he should get officer Pennington’s old motorcycle beat nabbing speeders?

Chris and Larry Mickartz

Chris and Larry Mickartz

Congratulations Chris and Larry Mickartz for launching Morgan Hill Today, the colorful new life-style magazine for our community. The Gilroy couple unveiled a poster of the new publication in front of a crowd of more than 100 guests at a gala at the Gilroy home of Ron and Addie Habit July 13. Morgan Hill Life publisher Marty Cheek chatted with the Mickartzs at the party about co-promoting cultural events in Morgan Hill. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Kristen Tapley, 8, who will be in the third grade at Jackson Academy this fall, just completed a three-week, intensive summer school program in the Theater Arts Department at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. There, she learned how to make papier mache masks and was part of DeltaFusion, an annual production that tells the stories of the San Joaquin Delta region and educates people about the many different nationalities that helped form a unique culture in the region. “I loved it so much I want to do it next year and the year after that and the year after that until I’m an adult who can then be a mentor for the children,” Tapley said. Her mother Melisa Beley is the daughter of Gene Beley, the publisher of the Country News from 1989 to 2005. Congratulations all!

If you haven’t yet been to one of the Thursday Night Street Dances on Third Street or the Friday Night Music Series concerts at the Community and Cultural Center, you’re missing out on a fun experience. The Thursday Night concerts have attracted great crowds to watch the bands play, then migrating into some of the downtown restaurants for a late dinner. Meanwhile, at the Friday Night series, the music has been great, and each week a different winery pours two select vintages. Where else can you go to see great bands without a cover charge, sit outside under what has been great weather, eat a picnic or purchase a wrap from Odeum, and dance the night away? They are both fabulous free family events that help make Morgan Hill such a fun place to live. See you there soon.
