Walking into Morgan Hill Barber Shop is like stepping into the “Mayberry” barber shop on the 1960s “Andy Griffith Show” — the ultimate gathering spot for men. You can practically hear the whistling of Andy Griffith in the background.

Owner Oscar Medina has been in the barber business a whopping 40 years. He’s been living in Morgan Hill for 10 years now and loves our town. He used to work at a shop in Saratoga but wasn’t a fan of the commute home. Can you blame him? Traffic along U.S. 101 is like sitting in a parking lot. So, when he heard about Joe’s Barber Shop closing down in Morgan Hill, he jumped at the opportunity to buy it. Oscar then remodeled the place from head to toe and reopened it in November.

And let me tell you, this is not your average shop. No, sirree! The shop’s team consists of three barbers. One is vintage barber Ron Sorci, Morgan Hill icon John Sorci’s cousin. They still give those hot steam towel shaves nobody else in town does, and they provide anything from a business cut to flat top, fades, beard trims, neck shaves, and facials.

Clients come from as far away as Sacramento and San Francisco to get a cut at this place. Heck, there’s even a guy from Michigan who works in the area that comes in because no one does it like Oscar. That’s some serious dedication.

But what really sets Morgan Hill Barber Shop apart is attention to detail. Their motto is: “Aim to please. If you don’t like the cut, you don’t pay.” That’s sincere commitment to customer satisfaction, right there.

Oscar said many youngsters have never been to a barber shop. Jesse was a young guy getting his hair cut during my visit. First trip in, he experienced such a difference compared to other shops he’s tried that give inconsistent haircuts. He went back again. He said Oscar takes his time and doesn’t try to get him out as fast as he can. Jim Leslie was in Ron’s chair. He goes there because “Ron gives a great haircut.”

Morgan Hill Barber Shop has been a Morgan Hill Downtown Association business participant in the Brew Crawl and the Wine Stroll. Oscar was new to everything downtown when he opened. Being a part of downtown events has enhanced his business. He even picked up three new clients following the Stroll, men who didn’t even know the shop existed.

So, if you’re looking for a wonderful cut in a welcoming environment, head (pardon the pun) on over to Morgan Hill Barber Shop. They’re located at 9 W. 1st St. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. They’re closed Sunday and Monday.  Walk-ins are welcome, but you may make an appointment by calling in at (408) 779.2214, reach Oscar at [email protected] or book online – morganhillbarbershop.com.

As a special treat, on Wednesdays throughout the month of June, get $5 off your cut. Just let the guys know you read my column in Morgan Hill Life.

As I close, just wanted to thank everyone who attended the MHDA Wine Stroll a couple weeks ago. We once again sold out and hope you all had a great time. And an extra special thanks to our volunteers. This event could not have happened without you.

So until next time, as someone must have said at some point — “Hair today, gone tomorrow.”
