web-Gospel-bluegrass-March-22The band “Bluer than Blue” played gospel and bluegrass music to about 80 people in the chapel at Advent Lutheran Church March 22 to help the hungry during the Lenten season through the Reach Out program. Almost 300 cans of food were donated and a few hundred dollars in cash was raised. Members of the band are Melissa Blas, Linda O’Maley, Ted Fishman, Bill Barnhart, Duey Englehart, Gilbert Padilla and Richard Simunic. This was the first time this concert was held and the church plans to make it an annual event.

Morgan Hill resident Bernie Mulligan, who attended the concert with several friends, said he likes the fact that the event brought people together to hear local musicians and help people in need at the same time. “I loved it. Absolutely loved it,” he said. “The best part was that it was not amplified, so you’re hearing true music. The music was fantastic and the price was right, donations of cans or moneys. It’s a true American art form of music, and the musicians exhibited it.

Mulligan said that an official proclamation passed by the city of Morgan Hill’s council years ago made the community the “Bluegrass Capitol of Santa Clara County.”
